If Mindy Kaling was a stock, her price would be going up. She’s a very busy person considering she is an actress, comedian, writer, producer and director, all before turning 35! Kaling first rose to fame when, at the age of 24, she became a writer (the only female) for the hit TV show, The Office. She was the lead writer of more than 20 episodes and also played the character of Kelly Kapoor in 159 episodes. Kaling is also an Emmy Award-nominated writer/producer who won the 2012 Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Most Exciting New Series. She had roles in No Strings Attached, The Five-Year Engagement and other recent films. Her 2011 autobiography, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) was a New York Times best-seller. She is currently the writer and star of her own sitcom, The Mindy Project on FOX.
She is the daughter of an architect father and OB/GYN mother who she has revealed are both Republicans. This may explain why Mindy Kaling is a Republican… or at least where she got some of her political beliefs. Her character (Dr. Mindy Lahiri) in The Mindy Project is an OB/GYN inspired by her real life mother.
Mindy Kaling, weirdly pro-gun Republican
Her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, ends with a satire eulogy told through the eyes of a friend in which she describes herself as a “weirdly pro-gun Republican”. This goes along with what Michael Schur (also a writer for The Office) had to say about Mindy during an interview, “She also was very pro-gun, which is very odd”. Schur had just finished saying that “it sort of snuck out that she [Mindy Kaling] was planning on — I don’t know if she did or not — but she was at least thinking about voting for Bush.” I suppose being “pro-gun” is very odd to Michael Schur but not ALL actors in Hollywood feel this way – see our pages about Bruce Willis & Laura Prepon.
As recently as the 2012 Presidential election Kaling responded to Vince Vaughn being a fan of Ron Paul that it “makes me like him more” via her Twitter account. While this wasn’t an endorsement we assume that she may have supported Republican Ron Paul for President in 2012.
Speaking of Twitter, Mindy Kaling is very active with her account. Follow her below or send her a tweet and thank her for being a conservative Republican in Hollywood.
The more we learn about Mindy Kaling the more we think she would be one of the most fun people in Hollywood to hang out with. She comes across as a very real and down to earth person – and with little to none when it comes to typical celebrity drama that often comes out of Hollywood.
Mindy Kaling is a Republican who also just happens to be one of our favorite comic actors in Hollywood. She has a long career ahead of her and one that we predict will place her with Hollywood comic greats such as Jerry Seinfeld. If you have not yet tuned in to her show give it a watch and see if you don’t fall in love with Mindy Kaling like we did.
